Background on the Portland Just Energy Transition Initiative:
Cities all over the world are taking the lead in responding to climate change. In the United States over 1,000 mayors (including Portland’s) have signed the Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement. Since the election, it is obvious that we cannot expect the federal government to act on climate issues. The measure is an opportunity for Portland to become a national model for taking proactive measures to fight climate change while providing major new economic opportunities for low-income neighborhoods and communities of color.
Through EcoFaith Recovery’s Beyond Fossil Fuels Initiative, faith communities are embarking on an exciting new strategy for organizing around this Portland Just Energy Transition Initiative (PJET) — a strategy that is…

Our invitation:
is for teams from congregations across the city to participate in a one-day mini-EcoFaith Institute to become grounded in The Practices for Awakening Leadership, build relationships with other congregations (including teams from eight congregations who already participated in the fall EcoFaith Institute), and prepare to dive into the PJET Initiative. Our vision is that the relationships formed, The Practices learned, the leadership developed, and the spiritual and organizing support received will increase capacity within and between congregations not only for PJET but for years to come.
Through a generous grant from the Bishop of the Oregon Synod-ELCA, the leadership of EcoFaith Recovery’s Beyond Fossil Fuels leadership team, and the participation of several Lutheran congregations, congregational teams* participating in the mini-Institute will also be able to participate in the ongoing coaching throughout the campaign. What a tremendous opportunity for faith-based organizing!
(*While we will not turn away individuals who wish to attend, based on prior experience it is EcoFaith’s strong recommendation that teams of 3 or more participate per congregation.)
